Selma Blair: From Hellboy to Molly Shannon

Someone get Selma Blair a Hooters baby tee and a pair of Daisy Dukes!

Believe it or not, the Hellboy II: The Golden Army star once dreamed of straying for a moment from acting to show off some T&A in a music video.

“I wanted to be the cheesy pretty girl in a video,” Blair says in the new issue of Los Angeles Confidential magazine, adding, “I want to be the air-brushed girl, like in an Aerosmith video. Glamorous, sweet, pretty, sexy…Everything I’m not seen as.”

While that’s debatable, her new sitcom role will probably increase the indulgence factor.

Selma stars as Molly Shannon’s self-absorbed spoiled daughter in the upcoming Kath and Kim. “I was in Budapest for six months shooting Hellboy II, getting tired of being away on location so much,” she remembers. “My life seemed really fragmented. I wanted to stay in one place longer. So I thought it might be nice to go and do a TV show.”

Selma Blair on Hellboy II

Liz Sherman’s role in Hellboy was basically to come out of her shell and accept her powers. In Hellboy II: The Golden Army, she faces an ultimate choice that will determine the fate of her relationship with Hellboy and their relationship with the human world.

“The scene with the Angel of Death is actually my favorite scene,” said Blair. “One, because the Angel of Death was such an incredibly beautiful creature to work with. I mean, just watching that creature brought tears to my eyes. Guillermo actually had to tell me to stop crying. Liz was stronger than that. But it’s a huge moment. I mean, that’s nothing any real person, hopefully in this world, will ever have that question. I mean, she will deal with the consequences later and I just don’t think she could believe that it would be real. What will happen in Hellboy III, what she will suffer, and what will happen to the world?”

And that’s the spoiler free explanation of her acting challenge. Safer topics include her hairstyle in the sequel. “It actually was Guillermo’s idea. I had really, really short hair at the time. I had shaved all my hair off, just for fun. I had really long hair, and I just gave myself a Mohawk, as you do, I guess, sometimes. It looked great. No, it looked great. I loved it. It looked great. I did it for a Vogue photo shoot, and I loved it. So I had this really strange Mohawk. That was a little too extreme for Liz. So that was a wig that I was wearing in the movie and that was Guillermo’s idea. Now I basically have the same haircut as I did in the movie. It was cute. We wanted Liz to have a more mature look than she did in the first one.”

Life’s golden for ‘Hellboy’ star Selma Blair

Some celebrities use their famous names to get every advantage. Others, like Selma Blair, go the opposite route.

After a waiter addresses her by a name not her own, the actress explains: “I go by a pseudonym that was my best friend’s name from high school,” she says, giggling. “She was the prettiest girl in my high school, and I always wanted to be her, and now I get to be her. And I love it.”

She’s also loving being surrounded again by her band of misfits in Hellboy II: The Golden Army, opening today. In the sequel, Blair’s Liz Sherman is in a tumultuous relationship with the scarlet hero (Ron Perlman). In between bickering about personal space, boundaries and Hellboy’s love of cats, they need to save the world from the ruthless Prince Nuada and his mythical army.

While filming the 2004 original in the Czech Republic, she says, “I was incredibly lonely. I’d gone through a terrible breakup. I depended on these people from Hellboy so much to get me through that, and I became really close to them. When I went back to the second one, I’d missed them so much.”

The feeling was mutual. Perlman calls Blair “truly a delight. She’s this cute little girl but also one of the guys. She’s got this really quick wit. She’s a crack-up. She’s incredibly bright and very quick, and she’s a great partner to work with.”

And Blair’s character has plenty to do this time. Liz is tougher and stronger than in the first installment.

Blair tempted by her demon

There are hot roles, and then there’s Liz Sherman.

She’s the pyrokinetic girlfriend of Hellboy, and Selma Blair reprises the role in today’s “Hellboy II: The Golden Army.”

The film, directed by visionary Guillermo del Toro, filmed in Budapest for six months. Blair’s favorite memory is when her mother, a retired Detroit judge, came to visit.

“It was six-day weeks and it was mostly nights for filming, so there wasn’t that much time for goofing around,” Blair said.

When her mom came, “She stayed in my trailer for two weeks and didn’t come to the set once. It was so bizarre. She stays in my trailer and has Hellboy make her martinis come cocktail hour. She thought that was the most fabulous thing in the world, that Hellboy would fix her a drink!”

SELMA BLAIR costars in “Hellboy 2: The Golden Army,” which opens Friday. She’s also in Lori Petty’s autobiographical drama “Poker House,” which just played at the Los Angeles Film Festival. This fall, she and Molly Shannon star in NBC’s American version of “Kath and Kim.”

Do you generally enjoy being interviewed?

Sometimes I think it’s really invigorating to talk about myself for a while! But then I feel really strange because I’ve been talking about myself for an hour. You know, it doesn’t make for a good conversation.

It’s maybe not dangerous but sort of exhaustingly odd to plumb yourself all day.

My whole life I’ve been missing a filter. I don’t censor myself very well. Thank God people don’t give that much of a hoot about me.

INT: Selma Blair

Selma Blair has one of the most fascinating careers of any actress in Hollywood. From the strangely appealing STORYTELLING, to the downright bizarre A DIRTY SHAME. She has had the opportunity to work with some incredibly gifted directors from John Waters to, of course, Guillermo del Toro who once again brings her back as Liz in HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY.

So, okay. Here I am, thinking that Selma Blair would be this ultra serious, indie actor who has no time for a silly on-line journalist. I walk in to meet with her, and almost the second I entered the room, I realized how damn cool she is. We talked Hellboy and we talked Guillermo, and before we even talked on camera, we joked about illegal substances. I heart Selma Blair! Hey, I even screw up a question and she is so sweet about it. Anyway, she is great in HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY… so go see it this Friday at a theatre near you.
